Italian cryptocurrency phenomenon on STEP Journal

Maurizio Di Salvo – Partner, lawyer and CPA – and Pier Giorgio Brugnara – lawyer part of the Private Client Services team – analyse in an article published in Issue I of STEP Journal,  the cryptocurrency phenomenon from an Italian point of view.

Due to a rise of digital presence and explosion of social networks, the perception of digital assets has rapidly changed. In Italy digital materials tend to be considered as non-economic assets.

The article analyzes the most relevant legislative and jurisdictional interventions regarding cryptocurrencies (and digital assets in general), alongside following issues. Furthermore, it outlines the main instruments provided by the Italian legal framework for the transmission of cryptocurrencies. Moreover, an emphasis is put on direct and indirect taxation of cryptocurrencies with some insights on international tax planning.
