Donald Trump has officially announced, through a letter sent on July 12 to the president of the European Commission, the imposition of new 30% tariffs on all imports from the European Union starting August 1, thus exceeding the previous threat of a 20% duty.<\/p>\n
These are horizontal tariffs intended to replace the existing 10% duties already applied to numerous goods, while the previous tariffs of 50% on steel and aluminum and 25% on automobiles remain unchanged. The United States\u2019 objective is to pressure the EU into making trade concessions, particularly to secure full, duty-free access to the European market.<\/p>\n
From a macroeconomic perspective, American protectionism risks translating into lower economic growth and higher inflation, disrupting global value chains and especially penalizing European exports, which are a cornerstone of industrial competitiveness both for the European Union and for Italy.<\/p>\n
The Italian sectors most exposed include agri-food, industrial machinery, automotive, and the pharmaceutical industry. Although maintaining a critical stance towards Washington, the EU has decided to keep negotiations open until the very last moment: the next three weeks will therefore be crucial for seeking an agreement, aiming to avert the entry into force of the new tariffs and potential European countermeasures, whose overall value is estimated at around 21 billion euros.<\/p>\n
